Last week, the Russian delegation headed by Sergei Kiriyenko, president of the Russian Nuclear Energy State Corporation ”RosAtom”, visited Mongolia and held meetings with Mongolian authorities, including Prime Minister Batbold.
The main topic of these meetings was about Mongolia’s possible involvement in the Russia-based International Uranium Enrichment Centre.
As the Government of Mongolia has shown big interest in this regard, an inter-governmental agreement was signed by the parties on November 1. Under the agreement, Mongolia will get guaranteed access to the uranium enrichment facilities in Angarsk.
At present, the project has three partners, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Mongolian government first expressed interest in the venture in May 2008.
In January 2006, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his country’s intent to develop a network of multilateral nuclear fuel cycle centers. These centers would, in the context of a global renaissance of nuclear energy, provide assured nuclear fuel cycle services to states on a non-discriminatory basis, while limiting the proliferation of uranium enrichment technology.
