SOCHI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th October, 2018) Mongolia is inviting the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, to visit the country to commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two states, Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar told Sputnik on Wednesday.
Earlier this week, media reported that Kim had been invited to visit Mongolia at any date that is convenient for him.
"Indeed our president [Khaltmaagiin Battulga] is inviting the great leader to Mongolia. The thing is that this year we are commemorating jointly the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relationship ... Our relationship has been a very long, traditionally friendly, mutually understanding relationship.
In the context of this 70th anniversary, we are inviting the great leader," Tsogtbaatar said.
The minister added that the invitation had also been extended in light of the 30-year anniversary of the visit of late North Korean leader Kim Il Sung to the country.
"Besides that, this year we are commemorating the 30th anniversary since Chairman Kim Il Sung [last] visited Mongolia ... That is also a historic event that we also want to remember with North Korean colleagues. From that perspective we extended our invitation. Of course we will be working it out through our diplomatic channels," the minister said.
