By-election of constituency no.24 of State Great Khural in Chingeltei district of Ulaanbaatar started at 7 am today. There are 23 precincts and 70 thousand registered voters in the constituency.
Following eight candidates are running in the by-election.
They are:
1. Zorigt, Minister of Minerals (MPRP)
2. Burmaa, head of Voters education center, civic organization (Mongolian Democratic party)
3.Jargalsaikhan (Mongolian United Traditional Party)
4. Tomorsukh (Freedom Party)
5. Uyanga, journalist and civic activist (independent)
6. Javkhlan, popular singer (independent)
7. Tomorbaatar (independent)
8. Arslan- head of Just Citizens Front, a civic group (independent)
MPRP candidate Zorigt is widely expected to win in the election. Burmaa, Democratic candidate is also expected to get close votes.Zorigt's election campaign was largely based on theme of "successful negotiation on Oyu Tolgoi deal".
If Zorigt gets elected, it would be demonstration of popular support for Oyu Tolgoi deal and other mega-mining projects.
